  • 「春が来た!」マラソンバードたちの旅

    by 安村茂樹, WWF Japan WWF Japan 自然保護室の安村です。 春が来ました! といっても、日本の話ではありません。 こちらとは季節が逆の南半球、ニュージーランドの話です。 先日、ニュージーランドのメディアで、そんな南半球の季節感じさせる記事が紹介されていました。 渡り鳥であるオオソリハシシギは、毎年この時期、一週間以上かけて、冬の厳しいアラスカから1万キロ以上の距離を飛び、この地にやってきます。 通称「マラソンバード」とも呼ばれるこの鳥たちは、地元では春の到来を告げてくれる「使者」だそう。 暖かいこの場所で、オオソリハシシギは食べに食べて栄養を蓄え、次の旅までに体重を2倍にします。 そして来年3月、中国や韓国の黄海沿岸、また日本の干潟へと飛んで来て数週間を過ごし、また繁殖地のアラスカへと旅立ってゆくのです。 毎年繰り返される渡り鳥のこうした営みは、ついつい見過ごされがちですが、遠く離れた外国から季節を運んでくる使者を迎え、楽しむことは、とても贅沢なことではないでしょうか。 そんな鳥たちは今、さまざまな環境問題によって脅かされています。特に深刻なのが、干潟など沿岸の湿地の開発。
