World Migratory Bird Day Event 2019 in Cambodia

Participants:
Around 350 participants including local students, teachers, site manager, rangers, local authorities, staffs from Department of Freshwater Wetland Conservation, Ministry of Environment, partner NGOs, birdwatchers and conservationist.

Outcome:

– Promoted concept of EAAFP
– Enhanced local communities, local students and public’s understanding on the impact of plastic pollution to migratory birds
– Provided education speech on how can we be a solution to plastic pollution and save the migratory birds to Bunrany Hun Sen Chariyavong High School students
– Photos exhibition of migratory birds with the name of species and habitat for participants to understand more about ecology of migratory birds.
– Encouraged local and public to engage in conserving migratory birds along its flyway
– Promoted the value of wetlands and the migratory birds
– Trees planting around the high school

– A lot of awareness raising materials are produced to students and school
– The event is broadcasting through social media and reach more than thousands of people

Summary:

On 10 May 2019, Department of Freshwater Wetlands Conservation of General Directorate of Administration for Nature Conservation and Protection, Ministry of Environment of Cambodia in collaboration with Secretariat of East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP), Department of Environment Kep Province and other NGOs partners organized the World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2019 at Bunrany Hun Sen Chariyavong High School locates in Kep City of Kep province. The purposes of the event are:

(1) To promote the concept of EAAFP,

(2) To educate the public to conserve migratory birds and its habitat,

(3) To encourage local and public to engage in conserving migratory birds along its flyway,

(4) To promote the value of wetlands and the migratory birds, and

(5) To awareness raising of the impact of plastic pollution to migratory birds and how can we be a solution to plastic
pollution and save migratory waterbirds.

There were approximately 350 attendees who are Kep provincial Governor, Secretariat State of Ministry of Environment, officials from Ministry of Environment, Department of Environment of Kep province, site manager, rangers, local authorities, local people, Bunrany Hun Sen Chariyavong High School teachers, and students as well as NGOs partners working on natural resource and wetland conservation.

The event including the question and answer section for interacting with students and the questions are relevant to the topic of world migratory bird day in 2019. There was also a migratory bird photos exhibition which provides species and habitat information for participants to learn more about migratory birds in Cambodia. Beside this, participants did tree planting in the school campus.
