Seeking additional band recaptures and resight observations of Beringian Dunlin throughout the East Asian-Australasian Flyway

Rick Lanctot, Shorebird Working Group Chair

Additional information on band recaptures or resight observations of the four subspecies of Dunlin (C. a. actites, arcticola, kistchinski, and sakhalina) that breed in Russia or Alaska, and winter in the East Asian-Australasian flyway are needed for a migratory connectivity study. The goal of this study is to identify subspecies-specific migratory patterns, winter distributions and key migration sites. In combination with light-level geolocation efforts, this work will provide a finer understanding for how the different subspecies are distributed throughout East Asia, and the vulnerability of the different subspecies to current and future intertidal developments within the East Asian-Australasian flyway. This study is the first phase of a master’s thesis exploring migratory connectivity of Beringia Dunlin.

Currently, we have received over 500 Dunlin encounters and would like to thank all the contributors to this collaborative study. Anybody with additional recapture or resight information, particularly independent observers or banders with unreported encounters are encouraged to contact Ben Lagasse (Master’s student, contact: ben.lagasse AT yahoo.com) or Rick Lanctot (EAAF Shorebird Working Group chair, contact: richard_lanctot AT fws.gov). Please fill in the attached recapture or resight excel file as much as possible or just send a message with details.
