  • Habitats: Pools, lakes, rivers, marshes, and swamps surrounded by dense deciduous forest. They prefer small islands and waterbodies with abundant emergent vegetation and wooded islets
  • Main threats: The decline in continental Asia related to habitat destruction (through expansion of mining, agriculture, and other industry) and exportation from China in vast numbers until as late as 1975, and loss of nesting trees
