Hwaseong City in Ro Korea, where the Flyway Network Site Hwaseong Wetlands (EAAF 142) is located, the main habitat of Far Eastern Curlews, carried out the Hwaseong Wetland Project since concluded an agreement with the EAAFP in May, 2020. The City proposed the launch of the “Far Eastern Curlew Network of the Korean Peninsula” based on the research findings.

After then, the three local governments of Hwaseong City of Gyeonggi Province, Yeonsu District of Incheon Metropolitan City, and Seocheon County of Chungcheongnam Province gathered and held a virtual signing ceremony the Far Eastern Curlew Network of the Korean Peninsula on December 1st, 2020 (Video) during the 2020 International Symposium for Hwaseong Wetlands hosted by Hwaseong City and the EAAFP Secretariat.  This Network has been established to act within the framework of the CMS Far Eastern Curlew International Single Species Action Plan, sharing information about the Far Eastern Curlews and their habitats (not only in the Korean Peninsula, but worldwide), and to implement conservation activities based on the shared information. At present, Hwaseong City took the lead as the Secretariat of the network. Any local governments in Ro Korea that have sites with significant records of Far Eastern Curlew in the Peninsula and will actively engage in the Network’s project can join this network.

The three local governments in the Network which have significant numbers of Far Eastern Curlews visiting their main habitats and have a strong will for the conservation. According to the 2019-2020 surveys (Nial Moores et al., 2020; National Institute of Biological Resources, 2019), 2,275 Far Eastern Curlew visited Hwaseong, 157 visited Yeonsu, and 1,234 visited Seocheon. Hwaseong, as the Secretariat, will work with the members of the Network from 2021, following its purpose.

알락꼬리마도요 한반도 네트워크의 발족과 앞으로의 활동

알락꼬리마도요의 주요 서식지인 화성습지를 보유하고 있는 화성시는, 2020년 EAAFP와 협약을 맺어 화성습지 사업을 진행하였고, 조사 결과를 바탕으로 ‘알락꼬리마도요 한반도 네트워크 (영문명 : Far Eastern Curlew Network of the Korean Peninsula)’ 발족을 제안한 하였다. 이후 경기도 화성시, 인천광역시 연수구, 충청남도 서천군 세 지방자치단체들이 모여 2020년 12월 1일, 화성시와 EAAFP가 함께 주최한 ‘2020 화성습지 국제심포지엄’에서 알락꼬리마도요 한반도 네트워크 협약식을 진행하였다 (관련영상). 이 네트워크는 CMS의 알락꼬리마도요 국제적 단일종 실행계획에 기여할 수 있는 범위에서 한반도 및 세계의 알락꼬리마도요와 서식지 정보공유 및 보전 활동을 하기 위해 설립되었으며, 현재 사무국은 화성시에서 맡고 있다.

본 네트워크는 알락꼬리마도요 서식지를 보유하고 있으며 네트워크 사업에 적극적으로 참여할 지자체가 참여 가능하다. 현재 네트워크에 참여하는 세 지자체의 경우 주요 서식지로 오는 알락꼬리마도요가 의미있는 정도의 수준이며, 보전의 의지를 강하게 가지고 있다. 2019년 ~ 2020년 조사(나일무어스 외, 2020; 국립생물자원관 2019)에 따르면, 화성시 2,275 개체, 연수구 157 개체, 서천군 1,234 개체의 알락꼬리마도요가 방문하였다.

사무국을 맡은 화성시는 2021년부터 네트워크의 목적에 따라 네트워크 구성원들과 함께 활동을 진행해갈 것이다.
