Summary:

The Misamis University, Philippines has partnered East Asia Australasia Flyway Partnership, Secretariat in Republic of Korea in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, and the Department of Interior and Local Government Units of Cities of Tangub, Ozamiz and Oroquieta and the Municipalities of Bonifacio, Clarin, Tudela, Sinacaban,J imenez, Pana-on and Aloran . The celebration of the World Migratory Bird Day 2021 with the theme ‘ Sing, Fly, Soar like a Bird” was translated to “Pag-awit, Paglupad, Pataas Sama sa usa ka Langgam” in Filipino Visayan Language.

The following are the highlights of the WMBD Celebration here in Misamis Occiodental, Philippines :

1. Coordination with Concerned Agencies and Local Government Units of Misamis Occidental

2. Design, Development and Printing of CEPA materials :5 Billboards, 150 Posters, 1 Streamer , and 84 WMBD T –shirts for the SKs. Billboards were installed at the coastal barangay of Migpange, Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental Barangay Mantic, Tangub City, Poblacion, Sinacaban, Misamis Occidental , Municipality of Plaridel and Baliangao.

3. A Lecture-Workshop about WMBD 2021 via Zoom Meeting was attended by 46 participants and in the Misamis University Facebook Live with 1,400 person reached on May 8, 2021 @ 9:00 AM held at Misamis University, Philippines.

The event aimed to capacitate the selected Sangguniang Kabataan of Misamis Occidental as Ambasadors and Ambasadress of Migratory Birds and other stakeholders in Misamis Occidental. During the event, the moderator and master of ceremony was Ms. Hanzen D. Tomatao, Master of Science in Development Communication who is the staff of Misamis University Community Extension Program (MUCEP) and a Faculty of College of Arts and Sciences, Misamis University. It was started with the preliminaries of the on-line event, welcome message of Director Grace V. Villanueva of MUCEP, Rationale of Forester Jersam C. Calago, Inspirational messages of two empowered and dedicated women, the Misamis University, Philippines President Dr. Karen Belina F. De Leon and ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity Executive Director Dr. Teresa Mundita S. Lim. Two keynote distinguished speakers highlighted the on line event, Associate Professor Yunalyn L. Villantes, PhD in Biology Candidate and Faculty of the College of Arts and Science of Misamis University, Philippines who discussed “ What About Migratory Birds” and the second speaker Forester Dennis A. Juab, a Juris Doctor graduate of Misamis University, Philippines and presently the Development Management Officer IV of DENR-CENRO, Ozamiz discussed the topic on Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act or RA 9147 and the Do’s and Don’ts in Managing Wildlife Migratory Bird. A short workshop facilitated by Forester Bobby B. Alaman, Staff, MUCEP, and it was formally closed by the Forester Guilry D. Cabatuan, CENR Officer of Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Community Environment and Natural Resources, Ozamiz City.

4. Coastal clean-up and bird watching activities conducted at 3:00 PM and was held at Mialen, Clarin, Misamis Occidental one of the coastal barangay in Misamis Occidental. A total of 70 participants attended the event composed barangagy officials and its constituents of Mialen, Clarin, Misamis Occidental together with their active Barangay Captain Honorable Rey S. Ebarle , SK Chairperson Hon. Ronnie L. Romientos, Jr., CENR Officer Guilry D. Cabatuan of DENR-CENRO,Ozamiz together with his personnel, PNP-Maritime, Ozamiz City lead by PLT Roger G. Del Rosario, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas staff and Misamis University led by Dr. Orlando De Leon, Director of Public Relation of the university, Director Grace Villanueva together with her staff of the Misamis University Community Extension Program (MUCEP) and staff from the College of Arts Science of Misamis University.

Outcome:

The Misamis University, Philippines celebrated the World Migratory Bird Day 2021 with the theme “Sing, Fly, Soar, like a Bird”. Or “Pag-awit, Paglupad, Pataas Sama sa usa ka Langgam” in Filipino Visayan Language. The WMBD 2021 event was posted at Misamis University website https//www.mu.edu.ph, EAAFP Website, WMBD Website, Misamis University and Misamis University Community Extension Program Facebook page, EAAFP Facebook Page and ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity Facebook page.

WMBD celebration is a biannual activity aims to raise organized this awareness-raising around the world to conserve and protect World Migratory Bird Species that every year migrate from the country of origin to other part of the world to search food in order for them to survive back to their country of origin.
