On 25th November, 2022, the Ulsan Corporate Champion Certificate-presentation Ceremony was held in G-Tower, Incheon, Ro Korea, to celebrate the first year of the Ulsan Corporate Champion program. Ulsan Metropolitan City and four Ulsan corporates (Hyundai Motor Company, S-OIL Corporation, Korea Petrochemical Ind. Co., LTD., Kyungdong City Gas co., Ltd.), which signed an MOU with the EAAFP Secretariat in May 2021, participated in the event.

The Ulsan Corporate Champion Program is under the EAAFP’s Corporate Champion which gives credit to corporates’ contributions toward the ecological conservation of migratory waterbirds and habitats in the EAA Flyway. Participating corporates are matched with one migratory waterbird species found in Ulsan and are given the role of species ambassadors, or the Species Champions, to protect the species and its habitat.

This event was held to express appreciation for the Ulsan Metropolitan City and the four corporate champions’ contributions and seek the direction of the Ulsan Corporate Champion program in the future. Following the congratulatory speech by Ms. Hwa-ja Shin from Ulsan City, Mr. Doug Watkins, Chief Executive of the EAAFP Secretariat, thanked Ulsan corporates for their support as corporate champions. He also expressed that the Ulsan Corporate Champion program will help corporates fulfill their corporate social responsibility (CSR) and will act as a growth ladder toward becoming leading ESG (ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance) corporates.

After the opening remarks, the attendees shared plans for the Ulsan International Migratory Bird Symposium (tentative title), which is scheduled in May 2023,  in line with the World Migratory Bird Day. The event will be held under the theme of “The role of corporates and local communities in the conservation of migratory birds”. Ulsan Metropolitan City, international organizations, experts, government officials in EAA flyway habitats, corporates, and civil society groups will attend the symposium to discuss the status of habitat management and the roles of different stakeholders.

In the certificate ceremony that followed, Mr. Doug Watkins presented certificates to the four corporate officials who attended on behalf of the corporate champions in Ulsan respectively.

The four corporates will play a role as Ulsan corporate champions until 2024 and contribute greatly to the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats through various cooperative channels between EAAFP and Ulsan corporates.

지난 11월 25일, 울산 기업 챔피언 프로그램의 첫 해를 맞아 G타워 본동 8층 회의실에서 울산기업챔피언 인증서 수여식이 진행되었다. 2021년 5월, EAAFP 사무국과 양해각서 (MOU)를 체결한 울산광역시와 울산기업 4개사(현대자동차㈜, S-OIL㈜, 대한유화㈜, ㈜경동도시가스)가 참여하였다. 울산 기업챔피언 프로그램은 동아시아-대양주 철새이동경로의 이동성 물새와 서식지의 생태보전에 기여하는 기업의 공헌을 국제적으로 인증하는 EAAFP 기업챔피언 프로그램의 일종이다. 참여기업은 울산에 서식하는 철새 1종을 선정해 해당 종과 그 서식지를 보호하는 홍보대사, 즉 철새챔피언으로서 활동하게 된다.

본 행사는 울산광역시와 4개사의 기업챔피언 활동에 대한 감사를 전하고 향후 울산 기업챔피언 프로그램의 방향성을 모색하는 것을 목표로 개최되었다. 울산광역시 신화자 사무관의 축사와 더불어 EAAFP 사무국의 더그 왓킨스 대표가 기업 챔피언 프로그램을 통한 울산기업의 후원에 감사의 말을 전했다. 또한 해당 프로그램이 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)을 다하는 데 기여하고, 선도적인 ESG 기업으로서 성장하는 데 사다리가 되어 줄 것이라고 강조했다.

개회사 이후 2023년 5월 철새 보전을 위한 기업과 지역사회의 역할을 주제로 한 울산 국제 철새 심포지엄(가제) 계획을 공유하고 의견을 나누는 시간을 가졌다. 해당 심포지엄에는 울산광역시, 국제기구, 전문가, 동아시아-대양주 철새이동경로 서식지 정부관계자, 기업, 시민단체 등이 참석해 탐조대회, 환경정화 활동과 더불어 학술토론을 통해 서식지 관리실태 점검과 철새보전과 관련된 이해관계자들의 역할과 그 방향을 모색할 예정이다.

이후 진행된 인증서 수여식에는 더그 왓킨스 대표가 울산 기업챔피언 4개사를 대표해 참석한 기업관계자 4명에게 인증서를 수여했다.

철새챔피언으로 활동하는 4개사는 2024년까지 울산 기업 챔피언으로서의 역할을 수행하며 EAAFP-울산 기업간의 다양한 협력 통로를 통해 보다 나은 이동성물새 서식지 관리 및 보전에 큰 기여를 할 것으로 기대된다. 앞으로 EAAFP와 울산 기업 챔피언 간의 철새와 서식지 보전을 위한 협력에 계속 동행하기를 기원한다.
