Birds Korea will hold a workshop to train the future local wardens to conserve the Hwaseong wetland for five days from 9th to 13th August with the support of the EAAFP Secretariat and the Hwaseong Eco Foundation.
Located in the center of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, the Hwaseong Wetlands in the RO Korea has been nominated as a Flyway Network Site (EAAF142) since 2018 as well as a national coastal wetland protected area in the RO Korea since July 2021. Furthermore, there is a possibility for the designation as a Ramsar site, as the biodiversity of the wetlands is beyond the the Ramsar criteria. Based on the recommendation of the Ramsar Convention to have wardens and rangers as a management method of wetlands, the EAAFP Secretariat and Birds Korea suggested to hire wardens of the wetlands. Furthermore, Birds Korea organized the training workshop to to grow potential workforce, with the support of the EAAFP Secretariat and the Hwaseong Eco Foundation, which will be held for 10 days in 2021.
The EAAFP Secretariat together with Birds Korea, KFEM Hwaseong, and KFEM has been conducting conservation projects with Hwaseong City to conserve the Hwaseong Wetlands since 2020. The team with the Secretariat has given the various suggestions to the city for management of the wetlands. Once wardens/ rangers, one of the suggestions of the team, is proactive accepted by the city, to monitor and protect wetlands continuously, this will be a key component of management.

화성습지 보전을 위한 지역관리자 양성 교육 추진(2021년 8월, 11월 총 10일)
새와생명의터는 EAAFP 사무국, 화성시환경재단의 지원하에 8월 9일부터 13일까지 5일간 화성습지 보전을 위한 지역관리자 양성 교육을 진행한다.
동아시아-대양주 철새이동경로의 중심부에 위치한 한국의 화성습지는 2018년 EAAFP의 네트워크 서식지로 등재되어(EAAF142) 그 가치를 인정받았으며, 2021년 7월 한국의 연안습지보호지역으로도 지정되었다. 세계적인 습지 보전 협약인 람사르 협약에서 제시하는 기준을 넘어서는 생물다양성을 가지고 있으므로, 람사르 습지로서 등록 가능성도 엿보고 있다. 람사르 협약은 습지의 관리방안으로 습지 지역관리자(warden) 및 지킴이의 활동을 권장하고 있으며, EAAFP 사무국과 새와생명의터에서는 지역관리자를 고용할 것을 제안하였다. 또한, 새와생명의터는 미래에 지역관리자가 될 수 있을 인력들을 교육훈련하도록 지역관리자 교육을 제안하여, EAAFP 사무국, 화성시환경재단이 지원하여 2021년 총 10일간 교육이 추진될 예정이다.
지역사회 및 시의 추천을 받아 선별된 7명의 교육생 및 EAAFP 사무국 직원들은 5일 간, 새와생명의 터 대표 나일 무어스 박사님의 강연에 따라 ▲ 습지의 현명한 이용, ▲ 도요물떼새 분류 및 동정법, ▲ 조수간만 및 환경 상황에 따른 조사 등의 이론 수업과 야외에서 조류 동정 및 계수 등을 터득하게 되며, 11월에도 추가로 5일간 교육을 받게 될 예정이다.
EAAFP 사무국은 새와생명의터, 화성환경운동연합, 환경운동연합과 협력하여 2020년부터 화성시와 화성습지 보전활동을 펼치고 있으며, 이 협력단위에서는 습지 관리를 위하여 시에 여러 제안을 하였다. 제안 중 하나인, 습지 지역관리자/ 지킴이를 화성시에서 적극적으로 활용하여 습지를 지속적으로 관찰하고 보호한다면, 이는 관리의 핵심요소가 될 것이다.
