The World Leaders’ Conservation Forum held in Jeju, Republic of Korea

The World Leaders’ Conservation Forum was held from 7 to 9 July 2015 at the International Convention Center in Jeju, Republic of Korea. It was organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Korea, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). There were 700 participants from 52 countries including central and local governments, international organisations, NGOs, and experts.

The Forum was set to become a regular feature in the world conservation calendar, as one of the outcomes of the 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress. The Forum included Expert Sessions and World Leaders’ Dialogues that covered a range of topics from the threats to biodiversity and co-existence between humans and wildlife to peace-building and sustainable development.

Tomoko Ichikawa, Communication Officer of EAAFP gave a presentation in the Experts’ Meeting 1 (Coexistence: Reduction of threats posed to biodiversity) reviewing threats to biodiversity and highlighting the urgent need for strong leadership in migratory species conservation and the importance of the CEPA and capacity building at various levels and targets.

In the Forum, the importance of sustainable development and trans-boundary conservation plans supported by the scientific approaches as well as the role of partnership were highlighted.
