Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the EAAFP Secretariat at G-Tower, Songdo on 10th March 2022. The agreement aims to facilitate each institution’s cooperation on the conservation of habitats and associated migratory waterbirds about the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) acknowledged by the UNESCO World Natural Heritage.

KOEM is a public organization under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries which plays a key role in sustainable conservation and management of marine ecosystems through the designation of marine protected areas, national marine ecosystem survey, reduction of marine pollution, and restoration of the tidal flat ecosystem.

The MOU aims to strengthen cooperation by encouraging inclusive and sustainable protection of the OUV of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage through responsible and collaborative conservation actions.

Expansion of cooperation on research and investigation to preserve the OUV (migratory waterbirds and habitats) of Korean Tidal Flat World Natural Heritage Site, and progress for the Phase II nomination of the World Natural Heritage Site will be the main cooperation parts. Moreover, both development and implementation of a CEPA (Communication/Capacity Building, Education, Participation and awareness-raising) program regarding migratory waterbirds and Korean Tidal Flat World Natural Heritage Sites will be developed.

Through the MOU, the Secretariat and our Partners can assist the Korean Government, particularly KOEM, to identify more potential and important tidal flats for the Phase II nomination and beyond. The EAAFP Secretariat expects more cooperation on research and investigation not only for Korea but also for other countries (e.g. ASEAN countries) with support on experience and knowledge-sharing by KOEM.
