On 21 December, Mr. Pete Probasco, the Chair of EAAFP announced that the EAAFP Foundation is established in Republic of Korea with endorsement of the EAAFP Management Committee and Finance Sub-Committee. In his email to the Partners, he noted that:

“Adopted at the 9th EAAFP Meeting of Partners (MOP9) in 2018, the EAAFP Sustainable Financing Strategy proposed a number of recommendations in response to the need to increase and diversify funding for EAAFP operations and activities to achieve its strategic goals. (…) in efforts to mobilize resources outside the Partnership, the EAAFP Finance Sub-Committee during their resourcing plan workshop in September 2019 noted the potential value of establishing a Foundation in the Republic of Korea as a channel of domestic fundraising and assisting to promote the work of the Partnership in the host country.”

The Foundation will contribute to providing the Partnership with a mechanism to support sustainable financing for the conservation of migratory waterbirds and habitats in our Flyway by increasing and diversifying funding base for EAAFP operations and activities to achieve its strategic goals and enhance collaboration with corporate partners. Based on due diligence and in-depth consultations with the host country (MOEK) and host city (Incheon Metropolitan City) to ensure that the governance and operational mechanisms of the Foundation comply with the host country’s laws, the EAAFP Foundations’ establishment was reviewed and received approval from Incheon Metropolitan City (the responsible authority).

The Chair announced that Mr. Doug Watkins, the Chief Executive of the EAAFP Secretariat, is the Chair of the EAAFP Foundation, that ensures full accountability for the financial management of the EAAFP Foundation to the Partnership. The Foundation website is currently under progress at https://foundation.eaaflyway.net/.
