“Birds and Schools” is an interactive and international programme for exchange between schools from different parts of the world, and to share what the students have done or learned about the migratory birds and wetlands they visited. The programme was initiated under the Wetland Link International (WLI) and the earliest event was held in 2016 in the East Atlantic Flyway. This year, for the first time, the programme was brought to East Asian-Australasian Flyway. To educate and raise awareness of the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats, we invited school students to visit a wetland, learn about bird migration, and wetlands and conduct activities related to what they have learned.
On 20th December, 2022, the first event of “Birds and Schools” was organized by the EAAFP Secretariat, WWF-Hong Kong and Incheon Metropolitan City Education Office. The event is also under the Incheon-Hong Kong Sister Site Programme. In this hybrid event, three middle/high schools and students from Incheon, Ro Korea (Incheon Haneul Academy, Incheon Namdong Middle School and Incheon High School) and two secondary schools from Hong Kong (Pui Shing Catholic Secondary School and Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School) joined.
The event was kicked off by a warm-up activity lead by Vivian Fu, Senior Communication Officer of EAAFP Secretariat. The students from both places taught each other the name of Black-faced Spoonbill, the bird that links up Incheon and Hong Kong, in their own languages. After that, an opening speech was given by Mr. Connor Walsh, International Engagement Officer from Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), who shared what has been done at the “Birds and Schools” event in previous years in the other flyways. Followed by a speech by Ms. Han So Young, Senior Supervisor of Incheon Metropolitan City Office of Education, Climate Change, Ecology and Science Education Team. She talked about the city’s work to expand school activities related to biodiversity and climate change. Mr. Yamme Leung, Director, Education, WWF-Hong Kong, introduced the “Wetland Incubators” project at Mai Po Nature Reserve and the Water Caltrops Fostering Project is one of the key events to engage local communities including schools.
The 2nd session was presentations by students. The first presenter was Ms. Taeyeong Kim from Incheon Namdong Middle School, who shared her bird surveys in Sorae Wetland and highlighted the importance of this site as waterbirds’ habitats. The second presenters were Ho Ying Yin and Yuen Rachel Lok Lam from Pui Shing Catholic Secondary School. They illustrated the aim to raise water caltrops in Mai Po to restore specialist species, such as Pheasant-tailed Jacana to Mai Po. Their team has tried to grow water caltrops at school which then transplant to Mai Po. After that, Gi-tae Park from Incheon High School presented his club’s project “Mudflat Monitoring ‘Gaenoon’” in Yeongjong Island and help to raise awareness of the biodiversity on mudflats to local people.

Five students (Chan Ho Yan, Fung Ka Lok, Mak Hoi Kei, Ng Sze Long and Tin Nok Pan) from Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School shared with us about their study of habitat conditions for growing water caltrops and finding solutions to improve the germination rate. The last presenter was Soo-yeon Yoo from Incheon Haneul Academy Botany Team. She presented her study on halophytes in Sorae Wetland and further propose to study blue carbon at the wetland.

At the end of the presentations, students from Incheon and Hong Kong were encouraged to ask each other questions. They shared their own interesting experience and discovery during their projects, and expressed that other than the scientific aspect, plants, birds and other creatures in the wetlands also have traditional and social values. The participants hoped there will be a chance that they can meet face-to-face one day!

제1회 동아시아-대양주 철새이동경로 “새와 학교”, 인천과 홍콩의 학생들을 새로 연결하다
‘새와 학교’는 세계 각지의 학교들 간의 교류와 학생들이 방문한 습지와 철새 관련 활동을 공유하기 위한 국제 상호교류 프로그램이다. 이 프로그램은 세계 습지센터 네트워크(WLI)에 의해 시작되었으며 가장 초기의 행사는 2016년 동대서양 철새이동경로에서 열렸다. ‘새와 학교’는 2022년 처음으로 동아시아-대양주 철새이동경로에 도입되었다. 철새도래지와 서식지 보전에 대한 교육과 인식 제고를 위해 학교 학생들을 대상으로 진행되었으며, 학생들은 습지를 방문하여 조류 이동과 습지에 대해 교육을 받고 이와 관련된 활동을 진행하였다.
2022년 12월 20일, EAAFP 사무국과 세계자연보호기금(WWF) 홍콩, 인천광역시교육청이 주최한 ‘새와 학교’의 첫 행사가 열렸다. 이 행사는 또한 인천-홍콩 자매서식지 프로그램에 의해 진행되었다. 이번 하이브리드 행사에는 대한민국 인천광역시 중·고등학교 학생 3명(인천 하늘고, 인천 남동중, 인천고), 홍콩 중학교 학생 2명(푸이싱가톨릭중, 원랑상회중)이 함께 했다.
행사 시작 전, 학생들은 비비안 푸 EAFFP 사무국 선임 커뮤니케이션 담당관이 의 진행 아래 인천과 홍콩을 연결하는 새인 저어새(위기, EN)의 이름을 각자의 언어로 가르쳐주는 시간을 가졌다.
본격적인 행사는 물새와 습지 트러스트(WWT, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust)의 국제 참여 담당관인 코너 월시의 개회사로 시작되었다. 그는 동아시아-대양주 철새이동경로가 아닌 다른 철새이동경로에서 진행한 ‘새와 학교’ 사업내용을 공유하였다. 이어 인천광역시교육청 창의인재교육과 기후생태과학교육팀의 한소영 팀장은 생물 다양성과 기후 변화와 관련된 학교 활동을 확대하기 위한 인천시의 노력에 대해 이야기했다. 세계자연보호기금(WWF) 홍콩의 야미 렁 교육담당관은 마이포 습지에서 진행하는 “습지 인큐베이터” 프로젝트를 소개하였고 그 중 마름 키우기 프로젝트는 학교를 포함한 지역사회가 참여할 수 있는 핵심 행사 중 하나이다.
이후 학생들의 발표가 진행되었다. 첫 번째 발표자인 인천 남동중학교 김태영 학생은 소래습지에서 진행한 조류 조사 결과를 공유하고 물새 서식지로서 소래습지의 중요성을 강조했다. 두 번째 발표자는 푸이싱 가톨릭 중학교의 허잉인과 위안 레이첼 로크람이었다. 그들은 물꿩과 같은 종을 마이포에 복원하기 위해 마이포에서 마름을 키우는 목적을 설명했다. 학교에서 마름을 재배하고 마이포로 이식하기위해 노력한 경험을 공유하였다. 그 후 인천고등학교의 박기태 학생은 영종도에서 진행한 동아리 프로젝트인 ‘갯벌 모니터링 -개눈’을 발표하였다. 그는 이번 프로젝트를 통해 지역주민들의 갯벌 생물 다양성에 대한 인식을 높였다 밝혔다.

원랑상인회 중등학교 학생 5명(찬호옌, 펑카록, 막해이케이, 응스롱, 틴녹판)이 마름을 재배하기 위한 서식 환경 연구와 발아율을 개선하기 위한 해결방안 모색을 위한 연구결과를 공유했다. 마지막 발표자인 인천하늘고등학교 식물학팀의 유수연 학생은 소래습지의 염생식물에 대한 연구를 발표했고, 나아가 습지의 블루카본에 대한 연구를 제안했다.

모든 발표를 마친 뒤, 인천과 홍콩 학생들은 질의응답 시간을 통해 프로젝트를 진행하는 동안 있었던 자신들의 흥미로운 경험을 공유했다. 또한, 습지에 있는 식물, 새, 그리고 다른 생물들은 과학적인 측면 외에 전통적이고 사회적인 가치를 가지고 있다고 말했다.
언젠가 인천과 홍콩의 학생들이 직접 만나 서로의 프로젝트 경험을 공유할 수 있는 기회가 있기를 바란다.
