Workshop on bird watching and eco-tourism

On 16 December 2015, a workshop on bird watching and eco-tourism was organized by Seosan City and Ecotourism Korea at the Seosan BirdLand, Seosan City, Republic of Korea. Forty practitioners from 17 ecotourism promotion sites in the RoK, eco-tour companies, wetland education center staffs, conservationists and local people attended the workshop. Tomoko Ichikawa, Communication Officer of the EAAFP Secretariat gave a presentation on eco-tourism examples in EAAF.

Victor Yu from the Ecotourism Taiwan introduced various bird fairs in Taiwan and an example of Green Holiday, a collaborative tour with Wild Bird Society of Japan, a Partner of EAAFP. The Green Holiday, targeting Japanese white-collar workers, includes an educational session on Barn Swallows that breed in Japan and winter in Taiwan, habitat management activity for the species, and an exchange program with local students who conduct Barn Swallow surveys in Taiwan.

Solongo Khunelbaatar from Ramsar Convention Secretariat introduced tourism at Ramsar Sites and the principles of eco-tourism. Tomoko followed by introducing eco-tourism good practice in EAAF, the importance of local resources, some effective tips to promote bird watching tourism, and the need to raising domestic demand for bird watching.

The workshop also included national level case studies, a discussion session on how to raise awareness on eco-tourism, and a field trip to Cheonsu Bay the following day.
