The Global Waterbird Flyways Workshop was opened with the symposium on 17 October to promote public awareness of the challenges facing migratory waterbirds in Korea and the prospects for the better conservation of both them and their habitats, for the benefit of people and of wider biodiversity. Local governments, domestic NGOs, embassies of the countries within and outside the East Asian – Australasian Flyway were invited. During the workshop, attended by about fifty domestic participants, the invited experts delivered the presentations on different flyway initiatives around the globe; pressures and threats faced by migratory waterbirds; opportunities for conservation and cooperation; and shared activities for migratory waterbird and wetland conservation in South Korea.
