EAAFP participates in second ASEAN conference on biodiversity

The second ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity 2016 was held from 15 to 19 February 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand. The conference, hosted by the Royal Thai Government, was organized around the theme “Biodiversity for Sustainable Development” by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) in cooperation with the ASEAN Member States (AMS), the ASEAN Secretariat and other partner organizations. Around 500 representatives from ASEAN governments, international organizations, the scientific community, NGOs and academia participated in this important meeting of biodiversity stakeholders in Southeast Asia.

EAAFP Focal Points from Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam were present at the meeting, as well as representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines. In addition to the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, other EAAFP Partners represented included the Secretariats of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Birdlife International, WWF and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

Chief Executive Spike Millington participated in a session on Ecosystem-based Approaches (EBA), facilitated by EAAFP Myanmar Focal Point, Mr. Win Naing Thaw and gave a presentation on EBA for conserving migratory waterbirds in SE Asia, highlighting issues of connectivity and scale. Spike also participated in sessions on sustainable financing, business and biodiversity and meeting the Aichi targets in the region, as well as meeting with EAAFP Partners on a variety of issues, including the development of a South-East Asia Network, proposed at EAAFP MOP8 in Japan, and how to provide support to this network, as well as a National Partnership meeting in Myanmar planned for 2016, details of EAAFP’s next Meeting of Partners with Singapore and nomination of Flyway Network Sites with several countries.
